Face Perception

Activation/deactivation maps and stimuli

Subjects watched a continuously changing montage of faces and objects on video goggles in the BIAC 4 Tesla MRI scanner. Patterns of brain activation to faces were seen in the fusiform gyrus (activation colored red in figure), a brain region that has been implicated in previous face processing studies. Using a Fourier analysis, a second region was identified that exhibits deactivation when faces are presented (deactivation colored blue in figure). These results were reported in Neuroreport (Pelphrey, Mack, Song, Güzeldere, & McCarthy, 2003).
